Charles “Chuck” Leslie Hoyt was born on March 24, 1947 in San Diego, California to Ruth Virginia Kollberg Hoyt and Leslie Duane Hoyt. He passed away on May 20, 2026 at the age of 79.
He married Kathryn Bryner in the Salt Lake City Temple on August 21, 1970.
When Chuck was five, his mother was introduced to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was baptized. This changed the course of his life and he had a firm testimony of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ for the rest of his life. His steady example and willingness to serve blessed the lives of many. While he was still 5, his family moved from San Diego to the Phoenix, Arizona area where they lived for 6 years. When Chuck’s parents divorced, he and his sisters, Judy and Carol, lived with relatives in Ludington, Michigan for a year while their mom remained in Arizona to take care of business.. When he was 16, his mother met and married Walter Lewis Garland. While in Michigan, Chuck worked on the ferry that crossed Lake Michigan to and from Wisconsin. He graduated from Ludington High School in 1965 and afterwards attended school at Sam’s Technical Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana. After a year, he served in the Eastern Atlantic States Mission for 2 years, mainly in Washington D.C. His mission was the place where most of his gospel knowledge was gained, as he grew up in an area that was too far from the nearest church building to be able to attend with any regularity.
After his mission, he attended Utah State University for one year and then transferred to Brigham Young University, where he met Kathy. He graduated in 1973 with a B.S. Degree in Business Management-Finance. He remained a devout BYU football fan for the rest of his life. His work took him from California to Minnesota and then to Pennsylvania. He severed his employment in Pennsylvania and headed to Price, Utah where he worked in the coal mines for 32 years, 5 years underground and 27 years on the surface doing maintenance work and electrical repairs. He worked the graveyard shift for most of those years. In 1984, he was on one of the first teams to attempt a rescue during the Wilberg mine fire. He knew all who perished, and the tragedy affected him deeply.
During his retirement years, he and Kathy enjoyed working at the Bishop’s Storehouse each week as well as going to their shift at the Manti temple. Chuck was known for his chocolate chip cookies and Dutch oven dinners which we all enjoyed during camping trips to Moon Lake. He liked gardening, woodworking, playing pinochle, and trips to Costco.
He is survived by his loving wife Kathy; his children, Shauna (Aaron) Dayley, Scott (Nancy) Hoyt, Julie (Jeremy) Montgomery; daughter-in-law Jami Hoyt; 14 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Virginia Kollberg and Leslie Duane Hoyt; his stepfather, Walter Lewis Garland; his sisters, Judy Loveall and Carol Krueskamp; and his son, Mark Hoyt.
